JEWELLERY CARE

Your jewelry is a treasured possession that, with proper care, can be cherished for generations. To maintain its beauty and longevity, handle your pieces with care and store them properly. Avoid exposing jewelry to harsh chemicals, perfumes, or excessive moisture, as these can cause tarnishing or damage. Clean your jewelry regularly using a soft cloth and mild cleaning solutions suitable for the specific metal or gemstone. When not in use, store each piece separately in a fabric-lined box or pouch to prevent scratches and tangling. By following these simple steps, you can preserve the brilliance and elegance of your jewelry for years to come.

Keep jewellery away from light and heat

We often protect our skin from the sun, but did you know it can also affect your jewelry? Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade or damage certain gemstones like amethyst, kunzite, topaz, and shell cameos. Delicate materials such as pearls and ivory may bleach under intense light, while gems like amber can darken over time. Excessive heat can also strip gemstones of their natural moisture, leading to cracks or discoloration. Opals, in particular, are vulnerable to sun damage and may turn white or brown, develop tiny cracks, or lose their vibrant play-of-color.

Keep your jewellery away from chemicals

Chemicals can harm or discolor gold, silver, and platinum, as well as damage certain gemstones. Everyday products like hairspray, lotion, perfume, and cosmetics may contain chemicals that can permanently affect the surface of pearls and porous gems like turquoise. To protect your jewelry, always remove it before applying lotions or cosmetics, swimming in pools, or engaging in strenuous activities like gardening and workouts.

Clean your jewellery with care

The best way to clean your jewelry is also the simplest. Use a soft brush, mild dish soap, and warm water to gently clean your pieces on a regular basis. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, or ultrasonic cleaners unless specifically recommended for your jewelry type, as they can cause damage. For intricate designs or hard-to-reach areas, a soft toothbrush works well to remove dirt and buildup. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Store your jewelry properly after cleaning to maintain its shine and prevent tarnishing.

Store your jewellery properly and safely

Never toss your jewellery on top of a drawer or dresser or keep them exposed to sunlight and extreme changes in temperature. Most jewellery come with a box or pouch at purchase, and these can be used for storage as well. Sterling silver, especially, needs to be kept in an anti-tarnish bag or cloth, and never exposed to air except when being worn. Pearls and opals, on the other hand, draw moisture from the air, so storing your opal or pearl jewelry in a dry area, such as a safe deposit box, can sometimes do more harm than good.
